FEPAC Adopts Standards Changes for Undergraduate Programs

Published April 8, 2019

Pursuant to the Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission (FEPAC) Policies & Procedures, Policy 4.10 Review of Standards states that FEPAC is tasked with conducting ongoing and comprehensive reviews of its accreditation standards in order to verify that they evaluate educational quality and are relevant to the educational needs of students seeking a career in forensic science.

Additionally, in order to position FEPAC to expand the scope of accreditation, a reorganization of undergraduate standards 4.0 through 4.2 was conducted.  Specific requirements for specializations of these concentrations were proposed. The standards reflect coursework that would be expected for individuals employed in specific fields.

After an extensive review, undergraduate standards 4.0 through 4.2 were reorganized to accomplish these goals.  The reorganization was distributed to all interested parties with a call for comments in November 2018.  The comments received were considered by FEPAC at its annual meeting, February 17, 2019.  The final versions reflect coursework that would be expected for individuals with majors in the respective specialties to prepare them for employment in these fields.  The reorganization was adopted by FEPAC at its February 17, 2019 meeting.

The approved and adopted changes to the standards can be accessed through this link: 02172019 FEPAC Standards Revised.  These Standards will be in effect for applications received for the 2020 review cycle.  All currently accredited programs and those programs approved for accreditation during the 2019 review cycle, will be granted a period of time to bring programs into compliance with the revised standards and will be required to provide updates of progress in the FEPAC Annual Report.
